Audi has recently completed the first laps with its 2026 Formula 1 car, marking the beginning of testing under the sport’s new regulations. The German car manufacturer is entering the F1 arena by fully taking over the Sauber team, now renamed Audi Revolut F1 Team. The debut testing took place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto were behind the wheel during a filming day. Here’s all you need to know about Audi’s start to this new F1 chapter.

It is advertised to offer a new era of racing, as the 2026 regulations have brought major changes, including active aerodynamics on the chassis and a stronger emphasis on electric power within the power unit. Audi’s R26 car was spotted running on the track in an all-black livery without detailed photos being shared ahead of the official reveal. However, fans have got their first chance to hear the new 1.6-litre turbocharged hybrid V6 engine developed by Audi, which is meant to showcase both technical advancement and the brand’s racing aspirations.

Audi is allowed two filming days this year, during which the R26 can cover up to 200 kilometres. It is meant to use Pirelli demonstration tyres different from official test and race compounds. The filming day in Barcelona was one of these sessions preceding the official season launch in Berlin on January 20 and the preseason private tests scheduled for later this month.

Having said that, the 2026 season welcomes new competition with Audi and Cadillac joining the grid alongside established manufacturers like Mercedes, Ferrari, and Honda. Audi is led by former Red Bull sporting director Jonathan Wheatley as team principal, and Mattia Binotto is the CEO of this F1 project. The team operates out of Hinwil in Switzerland, with the engine programme based in Bavaria, Germany.

Other than this, the 2026 season will see notable power unit changes. Audi and Honda are both debuting newly developed hybrid engines, while Red Bull partners with Ford for its powertrains. The regulations have completely reshaped chassis and engine designs, making the season highly anticipated by fans worldwide.

Are you excited to see how Audi’s entry will affect the competitive dynamics of Formula 1 in this new era? Let us know in the comments below.
